WHAT IS PROS AND JOES?

The SFWA Pros-n-Joes Event is designed to give amateur wake riders in South Florida the opportunity to not only meet pro-level wakeboarders and wakeskaters but to ride with them as well.  It is also an opportunity to grow the wake sports from the grassroots and make Palm Beach County relevant in wake related sports. The SFWA is dedicated to this purpose and our intention each year is to make this a family event that will attract both hard-core wake enthusiasts and the casual observers.  We strive to put on an enjoyable event that is unique in concept and fun for all involved.

The Pros-n-Joes Event is a unique concept in the world of competitive wake sports.  For each pro rider, there will be three local amateurs that will make up the pro riders “team”.  The competition is planned to have twenty four (24) local amateur riders plus ten (8) professional riders giving a total of forty (32) riders.  At approximately 8 a.m. on Saturday, the Pro riders will select the three Joe riders at random to join the Pro riders “team.”  The teams will compete behind a wakeboard boat against each other throughout the event.  Here is where our tournament differs from every other, 1.  Both wakeboarders and wakeskaters will compete together on the same team, 2.  This is possible because each rider is judged against their own skill level thereby giving the Joe rider and the Pro rider the same opportunity to compete. Again, this event will give amateur riders the opportunity to do something they may never get another chance to do: ride with the sport’s top professionals!  

Obviously, a whole day cannot be made from just the water activities; there must be “land” events also to keep the Pros-n-Joes Event going during the down times of the wake-related activities.  As for the “land” portion of the Pros-n-Joes Event, the park will be host to activities for the kids such as a bounce house and other “fun” items.  This year’s event will showcase a skateboard park, displaying local talent shredding the course.  There will also be giveaways, raffles and other events (autograph booths, etc.) for those not riding or enjoying the pro demos.  In addition, there will be food vendors and music throughout the day. Most importantly it will be a “showcase” for the many Pros-n-Joes Event sponsors; which will enable the event participants the opportunity to get a hands-on look at some of the newest products on the market.

Q:  I would like to sponsor the event?  Are there still opportunities to do so?  A. Yes, we welcome sponsors, if you are interested in sponsoring the event contact me (Jimmy Beno) at 561-312-0701 so that I can discuss the opportunities with you and rush you a sponsorship package for your consideration.  We truly value our event sponsors and we believe that the sponsorship packages reflect that attitude.

Q:  How long does the event last?  A.  The event is typically a full day, we start the first teams off the dock at 9:00am.  Participants must be there and signed in by no later than 8:00 am.  Plan on staying until 6:00pm or so.

Q:  What do I need to bring to participate?  A. You will need to bring your board (wakeboard, wakeskate) and your life vest (required).  Ropes will be provided and helmets are not necessary as we will not be hitting sliders/rails.

Q:  Can I pick the Pro I ride with?  A.  No, Pro riders and their team are selected by random.  The Pro riders that participate are subject to availability and often change, up to the day of the event. Past pros have included Nick Taylor, Andrew Adkison, JD Webb, Adam Errington, Jimmy LaRiche, Aaron Reed, George Daniels, Josh Palma, Shawn Watson, Collin Harrington, Zane Schwenk, Kevin Henshaw and many more.  We strive to have the best Pro riders in the world at the event so that no one is “disappointed”, as you can see from those committed thus far, that trend is continuing.

Q:  What is the tournament format?  A.  Pretty simple, each team gets two sets.  A set consists of each rider taking a pass up and down the lake (about five tricks each way).  After each set the team receives a score.  The team with the highest combined score of the two sets is the winning team.  It is our plan (subject to change based on availability) to award prizes for teams that finish in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.    You are guaranteed two sets and the chance to spend the day with your Pro rider learning from him in an up close and personal setting.  Not bad for the registration fee.

Q:  My family and friends want to come to the event, what is the entry fee into the park and is their room to watch the event?  A.  There is not entry fee to the event.  The event is free and open to the public so please, please, please bring as many friends as you want and tell as many people about the event as possible.  There is plenty of room at the park to view the event, besides for two sets of bleachers you can bring blankets and chairs to sit on the shoreline and watch.  In addition there will be activities for little ones and plenty of food vendors if you are hungry.  Event shirts will be on sale and there will be raffles for all kinds of prizes.

Registration for the 4th Annual 2010 South Florida Wake Association (SFWA) Pros and Joes Event is now officially CLOSED!!!!!!  Thank you to all the participants that have signed up.  What if you didn’t sign up?  Depending on the a number of issues it is possible that we will add an additional team to this year’s lineup.  If you want to be placed on a waiting list, then email me at www.sfwake.com .  Please understand the waiting list is first come first serve.  This waiting list will also be used to replace individuals that dropout of the event due to unforeseen circumstances (usually one or two a year).  Again, thanks to everyone that signed up and please do not hesitate to add your name to the waiting list if you are interested.

May 24th, 2008 – SFWA Membership Meeting

On Saturday, May 24^th, 2008 at 3:30pm until 7:00pm the SFWA will be hosting a membership meeting at the SkiRixen Cable Park located in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Please come and join us if possible. This will be the last meeting prior to our June Wake-n-Skate Rail Jam event.

We have a lot of things to discuss and are seeking more assistance and volunteers. If you haven’t been to a membership meeting, please do all you can to attend this gathering. As in the past, the schedule will be as follows: 3:30-5:00-Membership Meeting complete with food, beverages and fellowship, 5:00-7:00pm private riding time at SkiRixen. Also, just as in the past, there will be a small price to ride, $10 for members, $20 for member’s guests. Again, please try to make it if possible and I look forward to seeing you there.

Thanks to everyone who was able to come out to the SFWA membership meeting this past Saturday at Okeeheelee Park. It was exciting to spend time with approximately 20 or so members as we planned the upcoming year. After the break, I will give a recap of the meeting but I wanted to use this space to talk about two things. First Congratulations to the Juan Diego Pineda (pictured above) for winning the Gator Board Duece Pop wakeskate. As indicated in a previous post, we held a random raffle drawing for the wakeskate and Juan was the lucky winner. Again, congratulations Juan (on a side note Juan also volunteered to be the SFWA Technology Chairman in charge of videos and photos at upcoming events-Yeah Juan!!!!!). Second, as an organization we also made repairs to the docks at Okeeheelee Park. Someone had burnt a hole through the docks and we repaired them. Click on the more photos links to the left of the home page to see photos of the repairs. Now on to the meeting summary.

The meeting was held to focus on three main issues:

1. The use of Okeeheelee Park-The SFWA has been working with Palm Beach County and the SkiClub of Palm Beaches to revisit the use and rules associated with Okeeheelee Park. I am proud to say we are making progress but the details aren’t such to be published yet. Stay tuned for more information on this matter.

2. Upcoming Events-Are plan is to have two events this year. One in June/July that will be a pool/rail jam at Okeeheelee Park, the second is our Pros and Joes event in November (Bigger and Badder this year). We are excited about these events but….

3. Fundraising-With the events forthcoming, fundraising is going to be huge. It is imperative that if you have a business or know someone who does, see what you can do to get some sponsorship dollars. The June event will cost the association upwards of 6k, the Pros and Joes- 13k.

Time for our first membership meeting of the year. On Febuary 23rd, 2008, we are planning on meeting at Okeeheelee Park at the Micanopy Pavillon from 11:00am until whenever (if you need directions to Okeeheelee Park send me an email at sfwake.beno@gmail.com and I will forward them to you ASAP). We will be planning the upcoming years events and enjoying some food and riding behind the X-Star and X-2. If you haven’t been to a membership meeting please try to attend this one as it is going to be the decision meeting behind the upcoming year and we really value your input. I really hope to see you there!!!!

In addition to our membership meeting and planning for our event, the SFWA will be represented at the upcoming Surf and Wake Expo in Orlando on September 15, 2007. This is a big event where vendors and other organizations gather to view 2008 merchandise. It will be a great opportunity to get the SFWA’s name out. I will have pictures of the event that I will share when we get back. It should be interesting.

Finally, we are in the process of working on a big project that is going to be a huge step forward for wakeboarding in South Florida. I wish I could say more right now but it is too early in the process. Everything is going forward as planned and I hope to have a huge announcement at the tournament regarding this matter, if not prior. I apologize for the “hush hush” but I promise if it works out right everyone will be very happy.

So to close let me give you a membership update. Remember our goal is 100 members. Right now we have 50 memberships that equate to 96 members-4 short. If you have friends that ride and haven’t joined now is the time. Joining our association since the last update has been Vernon Jones, Jr., Tracy Hyde, James Seifert, Lori Frisard, Glennon Brown, Daniel Henderson, Eric Gliner and family, and Mike aka “the angry wakeboarder ” Alliot. As always, join me in welcoming our newest members.

Please continue to check the website often as I plan to do more updates as we get closer to the tournament. Our official announcement will come right after September 15, 2007. So check back and don’t be afraid to leave comments.

Well, we are going to try it again and hopefully mother nature cooperates with us this time. On SEPTEMBER 8, 2007 at the SkiRixen Cable Park located in Deerfield Beach, Florida from 3:00pm until 7:00pm we will host a SFWA membership meeting. If you are a member of the SFWA, this meeting is a must as we will be discussing our November 17, 2007 event-”Pros and Joes”. It is imperative that you come to this meeting as we will be discussing several issues including volunteering and the overall concept. If you are not a member of the SFWA, come check us out. See what we are about and enjoy some time with fellow riders.

The schedule is going to be just like last time and is as follows:

3:00pm-4:00pm Membership Meeting to discuss the November 17th Pros and Joes Event

4:00pm-5:00pm Food, Fellowship and streching for those who need it (Morgan). Once again, we will cook up some hot dogs and hamburgers under the pavillion located next to the skatepark.

5:00pm-7:00pm Cable Park riding!!!!!

For those of you that didn’t make the first meeting or left during the rain, there are a few pointers regarding the cable park.

1. You need to bring your own board if you plan to hit the sliders and kickers. The SkiRixen boards (which are very limited) are not allowed to be used on the sliders.

2. You need a helmet to hit the sliders and kickers. You must provide your own helmet as they are not renting helmets any longer.

3. You must bring your life jacket.

In general, if you want to ride you need to bring everything necessary to do so. I am looking forward to seeing everyone there, again there is a limit to the number of riders (roughly twenty-five) so it is first come first serve. Cost to members will be $10 and $20 to non-members, also paid up front.

As posted earlier, the SFWA held it’s first membership meeting at the SkiRixen Cable Park on June 30, 2007. Unfortunately, mother nature would not cooperate as the rain poured down. However, we weren’t denied and for those who made it out, the day finished on a positive note with food, conversation and, most importantly, riding.

In total about 15 members (and their spouses who cheered them on while they rode) showed up and braved the rains for almost two hours. The weather cleared and we were able to hold a small membership meeting followed by an hour and a half of riding. If you have never been to a cable park it is an awesome experience. Of the 10 plus people who rode several were first time riders and everyone left wanting more. The riding was A++ again. I am always impressed with the riders in our organization. Even those riding for the first time at a cable park were able to pull some smooth moves. Except for SFWA Rudy L. shutting the park down for five minutes because he could not say within the bouys (stay in between the bouys Rudy!!!!) the riding went of without a hitch.

This event gave us a great opportunity to meet and talk about our upcoming events (September and November) and a chance to bond as a club. The SFWA is dedicated to advancing the wakeboarding lifestyle but more importantly we want to create an organization of friends that ride together.
