The future of the South Florida Wakeboarding Association (SFWA)…sounds like a scary title doesn’t it? Well it is not, it is actually the prelude to a major announcement relating the association. So let’s get to the announcement and then we can talk about how we got here. Starting with the publishing of this post, the leadership of the SFWA will be changing. Morgan (Baer) and I (Jimmy Beno) will both be stepping down and handing control (and the future of the SFWA) to Kimber and Rishy Rajoo. You may know Kimber and Rishy through their production company R2R Productions. They have both been very active in the wake community over the past several years wth their latest journey being the ultra successful Railapoolza event that was recently held in Orlando. So what does this mean for the SFWA? We believe it means the first steps on a journey that will involve growing the SFWA to levels beyond what we could have dreamed. So now that the announcement is out of the way… let’s get to the background.

A bit of history first. Believe it or not the SFWA has been in existance for six years now. We have hosted five Pros and Joes events (each more successful then the previous one), a rail jam event and a true tournament in the Showdown event. When we first started the SFWA we charged for memberships and had a paid membership list of almost 200 plus wake enthusiats throughout South Florida. The SFWA has been my heart for a long time. It allowed me to meet my two best friends in Morgan and Dan Kubes, it gave me an opportunity to participate in a sport I love so much, it allowed me the chance to meet so many amazing riders (and their parents) and so many amazing Pros and the people that they represent, it provided my son opportunities he never would have had without the organization and in the end it accomplished my goal which was to raise the level of awarness regarding the wake sports here in South Florida. I mean come on…we have approved rails in a lake at Okeeheelee Park. Can anyone familiar with that area believe that? It has been an unbelievalbe six years with so many more things on the horizon. The new lake in Boca is close to being open and it will be the home for our future events. There have been discussions regarding a tour stop here and there are many more event opportunities still out there. The future is so bright for the SFWA.

So if it is all positive then why go? I think change is necessary for growth. Morgan and I never envisioned doing this past five years. We said from day one that we would dedicate five years to the process and then move on. After a period of time your vision can become stalled and the growth non-existent. Some times fresh eyes are needed to look at the situation and determine the best way to proceed. I think that was happening here. Morgan has begun a new life in a new business, my children have grown and their activities have lead me in different directions. I still love the sport and I still ride as much as possible but the drive has left me. My time is so divided that I can’t give what I once could and that has always been when I said I would move on.

So what to do at that point? Honestly we thought about just shutting every thing down. No more SFWA, no more events. But I couldn’t do that. I think about all the young riders that started to some degree their journeys in our events and have gone on to huge careers in the sport. Scott Stewart, Steel Lafferty, Noah Flegel, Troy Wynne, Juan Mendez, Tracy Baynham and many more. All of these riders I can remember six years ago in our first event just getting their feet wet in the sport. Having a local event to go to helped stoke the fire in them and look where it helped lead them. How can we stop that? With that in mind we needed to find someone with the passion that we had six years ago, someone with the drive and experience to grow the sport, to take the SFWA to the next level. We believe we have found that in Kimber and Rishy.

Kimber and Rishy have that drive. They are great people with a true love for the sport. After meeting with them on this transitition I am once again excited about the future of the SFWA. So please welcome them and support them as you have Morgan and I. I will be helping with Pros and Joes this year and then I will be finished, however, the SFWA still has many many years left.

So thank you to everyone that has made the SFWA a success. I hope that our little association has touched your life in some way over the years. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

MULLET’S CABLE WAKE PARK (LAND USE PROPOSAL)
MARCH 15 @7PM APPROVAL MEETING IS AT THE MARTIN COUNTY ADMINISTRATIVE CENTER (2401 SE MONTEREY RD., STUART 34996)
PLEASE COME AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT, EVERY PERSON COUNTS!
*ALSO IF YOU CAN GO TO THE MEETING AND YOU DON’T HAVE A RIDE JUST HIT ME UP B/C WE CAN GET YOU THERE…THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!
*PLEASE LIKE THIS FACEBOOK PAGE AND ALSO TELL …ALL YOUR FRIENDS TO LIKE ITThe following provides information about the proposed project. We are interested in hearing your thoughts on the project. Please add your comments and (LIKE) our Facebook discussion page, or see the additional contact information provided below.

Cable-skiing at Mullet’s will open up the sport to people of all ages and will provide well managed facilities for both sports enthusiasts and family recreation.

WHAT IS A CABLE SKI PARK?

Cable-skiing allows people to water-ski and wakeboard without a boat. It works just like a T-Bar or Pommer at a mountain ski area, but the towers are much smaller and don’t disturb the natural scenery. A horizontal cable suspended on towers is powered by a quiet electric engine. This pulls water-skiers and wake-boarders around a lake. There will be heal and toe jumps, sliders and A frames so riders can perform tricks which are judged in competitions. A skatepark, café, and pro shop are also being proposed as part of the project.

WHICH LOCATION IS BEING PROPOSED?

The lake is in between the turnpike and I95 north of Bridge Rd.

WHY THIS SITE?

* This lake is the right dimensions with enough surrounding land.

* There are not many issues with surrounding property owners.

* The site would provide a beautiful park which is sheltered from the wind.

WHAT TYPE OF FACILITY IS BEING PROPOSED AT MULLET’S?

The Cable Wake Park proposal includes:

* State-of-the-art cableway
* Starting Jetty
* Showers and Changing rooms
* Pro-Shop
* Cafe
* Shaded outdoor seating area
*Indoor/outdoor skatepark
*Cabins
HOW DO YOU START?

You queue up at the starting dock, rope in hand; with the other end of the rope queued up in the tower (mast) next to the cable, awaiting a carrier. As the carrier arrives, it hooks the rope and continues on its way, pulling you off the starting dock and out onto the water.
The system is controlled by a fully trained operator at all times.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU FALL?

You simply swim to shore and walk back to the starting dock. The distance is short and time is minimal before you’re out on the water riding again.

WHAT ABOUT GETTING OUT OF THE WATER?

We will provide a number of floating jetties with steps to allow for easy exit from the water and taking into consideration the points where it is most common for riders to fall.

HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN RIDE AT THE SAME TIME?

Anywhere from six to twelve, or more people; It depends on the length of cable and number of carriers of the particular cableway.

The beauty and value of cable is that it opens up wakeboarding to the masses, thanks to the reduced costs of running and the higher number of people it’s possible to pull at any one time. With cable’s ability to tow many people at the same time, groups of people can be catered for much more easily than behind a boat.

WHAT IS OUR TARGET MARKET?

People of all ages, anyone who can swim can ride a cableway. They are popular with Wakeboarders, Snowboarders, Skateboarders, Sport enthusiasts and fitness fanatics.

ARE THERE EXISTING CABLE WAKE PARKS?

Yes, there are more than 150 parks in the world.

HOW CAN I SEE ONE RUNNING?

A video is attached to this Facebook page.
Search for ‘Cable Wakeboard’ on Youtube and you will find many videos to watch.

HOW TALL ARE THE TOWERS AND HOW MANY ARE THERE?

There are 6 towers, each stand 11m tall and held in position by a pair of support cables. A pair of one inch running cables are suspended from the towers; approx 10m above the water. The towers are a lattice like structure and blend into the background very well.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE YOU EXPECTING?

The average daily attendance is expected to be between 100 and 150 riders (15-25 riders per hour). There will be competition and family day events on 4 or 5 weekends during the year, these will attract more people and be subject to an event management plan.

CAN THE PARK BE USED DURING COMPETITIONS?

Yes, we will section off a part of the park on competition and event days.

WHAT ABOUT CAR PARKING?

We will provide additional parking along the lake side for an incredible spectator experience.

WHAT ABOUT NOISE?

Because the Cable is powered by an electric motor it is very quiet in operation (45dba).
The ride is not like a roller coaster where people scream at every twist and turn, concentration and focus is required to ride a wakeboard well.

HOURS OF OPERATION?

The proposed Cable Park will be open 8:00am to one-half hour before sunset everyday.

IS THE WATER SAFE?

Yes. Extensive water testing will be carried out by independent consultants to determine that the water quality at the lake is within the guidelines for this activity. Water will be laboratory tested; both weekly and after heavy rainfall. A Best Management Practice (BMP) will be created to manage the impact of severe storm events.

IS THE WATER DEEP ENOUGH?

The lake is deep enough. It averages about 15 feet deep.

WHAT ABOUT THE SAFETY OF RIDERS?

All riders must wear a floatation vest and safety helmet.

WILL IT POLLUTE THE LAKE OR THE WETLANDS?

No, the motor is electric therefore no fuel used, so accidental spills or exhaust fumes are not possible, there are no lubricants on the cable and even the liquid used to help riders slip into the wakeboard boot easily is environmentally friendly.

IS IT TRUE THAT THIS ACTIVITY CAN HELP TO IMPROVE WATER QUALITY?

Yes, the sprinkling of water from the edge of the ski/board creates artificial ventilation. With average capacity of 50% (8hrs and 8 riders) 65kg of Oxygen will be transferred into the water every day!

WILL I GET SPLASHED BY RIDERS WHEN WALKING AROUND THE LAGOON?

No, the overhead cable provides a safe distance from shore so this cannot happen.

WHO DO I CONTACT FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION?

The 5th Annual South Florida Wake Association (SFWA) Pros and Joes Wake event was held on November 12th, 2011 in West Palm Beach at beautiful Lake Okeeheelee. The event was a success highlighted by incredible riding from both the Pro and Amateur riders, excellent weather, a wide variety of sponsors and a great crowd. This year’s event Pro List included Scott Stewart, Daniel Powers, Nicola Butler, Steele Lafferty, Adam Errington, Zane Schwenk, Josh Palma, Andrew Adkison, JD Webb and Phil Soven. Not to be outdone, the amateur rider list included some up and coming names like Noah Flegel, Keenan Allen, Robby Holihan and soon to be known Juan Mendez.

The tone of the event was set by the smooth vocal stylings of the Dano-the-Mano and overall this year’s event boosted the best all around level of riding seen in all five past events. In addition, this year’s event included filming via helicopter. The resulting footage was amazing and available to be seen on the SFWA website, http://www.sfwake.com.

The SFWA is proud to host this event each year but the hosting of the event would not be possible without our sponsors. The sponsors this year included South Florida Mastercraft, Motion Watersports, CWB Board Co., Red Bull, Muscle Milk, Broward Motorsports, Jamba Juice, Exceed Wetsuits, Nacho Bizness, Wakeboardingfilms.com, Boca Raton Helicopters, R2R productions, Evidence Clothing, Virtue Wakeskates, Nike 6.0, Billabong/Von Zipper and Just-In-Time window tinting. Again without our sponsors the event would not be possible. In addition, the SFWA would like to thank the event volunteers and Zane Schwenk. Zane is a great ambassador for the sport of wakeboarding and it is through his help that this event happens each year.

The tournament is simple; each pro is paired with three amateur riders to form one team. The teams each take two sets. The score for each team set is added together for one team score. From there first to fourth places were handed out along with a best crash award. The trick level was insane this year with numerous wake-to-wake sevens being thrown by the am riders. In the end the winning teams were as follows (Click the Read More link to see winners and Pictures):

The 5TH annual Pros and Joes is closed for registration is no longer seeking amatuer participants. This doesn’t mean you can’t come out and enjoy the event though. Make a day out of it and see some of the best riding around. See you on November 12th, 2011 at Okeeheelee Park. For more information on Pros and Joes click the link below to read the rest of the story!!

New to Pros and Joes? Want to know what all the excitement is about? Click the below for the rest of the story!

WHAT IS PROS AND JOES?

The SFWA Pros-n-Joes Event is designed to give amateur wake riders in South Florida the opportunity to not only meet pro-level wakeboarders and wakeskaters but to ride with them as well. It is also an opportunity to grow the wake sports from the grassroots and make Palm Beach County relevant in wake related sports. The SFWA is dedicated to this purpose and our intention each year is to make this a family event that will attract both hard-core wake enthusiasts and the casual observers. We strive to put on an enjoyable event that is unique in concept and fun for all involved.

The Pros-n-Joes Event is a unique concept in the world of competitive wake sports. For each pro rider, there will be three local amateurs that will make up the pro riders “team”. The competition is planned to have twenty four (24) local amateur riders plus ten (8) professional riders giving a total of forty (32) riders. At approximately 8 a.m. on Saturday, the Pro riders will select the three Joe riders at random to join the Pro riders “team.” The teams will compete behind a wakeboard boat against each other throughout the event. Here is where our tournament differs from every other, 1. Both wakeboarders and wakeskaters will compete together on the same team, 2. This is possible because each rider is judged against their own skill level thereby giving the Joe rider and the Pro rider the same opportunity to compete. Again, this event will give amateur riders the opportunity to do something they may never get another chance to do: ride with the sport’s top professionals!

Obviously, a whole day cannot be made from just the water activities; there must be “land” events also to keep the Pros-n-Joes Event going during the down times of the wake-related activities. As for the “land” portion of the Pros-n-Joes Event, the park will be host to activities for the kids such as a bounce house and other “fun” items. This year’s event will showcase a skateboard park, displaying local talent shredding the course. There will also be giveaways, raffles and other events (autograph booths, etc.) for those not riding or enjoying the pro demos. In addition, there will be food vendors and music throughout the day. Most importantly it will be a “showcase” for the many Pros-n-Joes Event sponsors; which will enable the event participants the opportunity to get a hands-on look at some of the newest products on the market.

SO WHERE AND WHEN IS PROS AND JOES?

The SFWA Pros-n-Joes event will be held this year on Saturday, November 12th, 2011 at the Micanopy Pavillion within Okeeheelee Park, West Palm Beach, Florida. If you not familiar with the area, here is a map to the location http://www.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=109239636025995588089.0004733c77f745ab48542&source=embed&ll=26.426309,-79.856873&spn=0.852236,1.230469&z=10

FAQS

Q: I would like to sponsor the event? Are there still opportunities to do so? A. Yes, we welcome sponsors, if you are interested in sponsoring the event contact me (Jimmy Beno) at 561-312-0701 so that I can discuss the opportunities with you and rush you a sponsorship package for your consideration. We truly value our event sponsors and we believe that the sponsorship packages reflect that attitude.

Q: How long does the event last? A. The event is typically a full day, we start the first teams off the dock at 9:00am. Participants must be there and signed in by no later than 8:00 am. Plan on staying until 6:00pm or so.

Q: What do I need to bring to participate? A. You will need to bring your board (wakeboard, wakeskate) and your life vest (required). Ropes will be provided and helmets are not necessary as we will not be hitting sliders/rails.

Q: Can I pick the Pro I ride with? A. No, Pro riders and their team are selected by random. The Pro riders that participate are subject to availability and often change, up to the day of the event. Past pros have included Nick Taylor, Andrew Adkison, JD Webb, Adam Errington, Jimmy LaRiche, Aaron Reed, George Daniels, Josh Palma, Shawn Watson, Collin Harrington, Zane Schwenk, Kevin Henshaw and many more. We strive to have the best Pro riders in the world at the event so that no one is “disappointed”, as you can see from those committed thus far, that trend is continuing.

Q: What is the tournament format? A. Pretty simple, each team gets two sets. A set consists of each rider taking a pass up and down the lake (about five tricks each way). After each set the team receives a score. The team with the highest combined score of the two sets is the winning team. It is our plan (subject to change based on availability) to award prizes for teams that finish in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. You are guaranteed two sets and the chance to spend the day with your Pro rider learning from him in an up close and personal setting. Not bad for the registration fee.

Q: My family and friends want to come to the event, what is the entry fee into the park and is their room to watch the event? A. There is not entry fee to the event. The event is free and open to the public so please, please, please bring as many friends as you want and tell as many people about the event as possible. There is plenty of room at the park to view the event, besides for two sets of bleachers you can bring blankets and chairs to sit on the shoreline and watch. In addition there will be activities for little ones and plenty of food vendors if you are hungry. Event shirts will be on sale and there will be raffles for all kinds of prizes.

So there you have it. Let’s make the 5th Annual Pros and Joes the best year ever for Pros and Joes. If you have any questions about the information provided above or about information that I didn’t cover, please do not hesitate to contact us via email atsfwake@yahoo.com.

See you there and keep shredding!!!

Jimmy Beno, SFWA President

Well it has taken some time but the recap is finally finished. I wish I could take credit for writing it but for that I thought it would good to bring in the big guns. So writing this year’s recap is SFWA member, event participate, amazing rider and good friend Tracy Baynham. Tracy took the lead and asked to write a recap, she did and the SFWA thanks her for her involvement. So without further ado, the event recap for the 2010 SFWA Pros and Joes Wake event.

2010 Pros and Joes Event Recap

by Tracy Baynham

On November 6th, 2010, twelve of the best professional boat riders in the wake industry came together with thirty six of Florida’s local amateur riders of all ages and skill levels to compete in the fourth annual Pros and Joes Wake Event held at Okeeheelee Park Lake in West Palm Beach, Florida. Hosted by the South Florida Wakeboarding Association, this competition has proven to be one of the most unique and fastest growing pro/am competitions in the South East. Throughout the day, over 1,000 spectators were able to witness some of the best pro riders in the world team up with locals and compete in a both friendly and fun environment.

While in the past three events, the lineup of pro riders has been awesome this year was by far the deepest field seen yet. The twelve professional riders included Rusty Malinoski, Josh Palma, JD Webb, Nick Taylor, Andrew Adkison, Andrew Fortenberry, Scott Stewart, Steel Lafferty, Adam Errington, Jimmy LaRiche, Shawn Watson and Zane Schwenk. Each pro was assigned three amateur riders that composed their team for the day. This event not only allowed the amateur riders the chance to be on the boat spectating while their pro rode, but also allowed them the opportunity to get to know the pros on a more personal level. The pros helped amateurs plan out their run, gave advice and encouragement, and spent the day just relaxing with their team and getting to know many of the local riders and their families.

On the day of the event, the first team, Team Fortenberry, was off the dock by eight am in less than ideal conditions. A cold front had moved in a few days before the event so the first riders were met with chilly temperatures in the upper 50’s and winds gusting up to twenty to twenty five miles per hour. Luckily as the day went on the temperatures warmed up and the wind would occasionally die down allowing it to be an overall beautiful day. Each team would load up on the boat and the pro would ride first, followed by their three amateurs, or “Joe”, riders. Although the pros were not scored in the team scoring along with their amateur riders, they did have the opportunity to compete for a $1,000 prize among each other for the best trick. At the end of the day, JD Webb received this award for his Pete Rose 540. On the amateur side, nine-year-old Drew Beno won best amateur trick for his backside shuv-it which impressed the judges due to the riders age and the difficult windy riding conditions.

By two that afternoon, each of the twelve teams had the opportunity to ride and the judges tallied scores with the top five teams advancing to the finals. Among the teams to advance were Team Palma, Malinoski, Webb, Stewart and Adkison. For the remainder of the event, these five teams each rode again with the level of riding greatly improved as the amateurs began to adjust to and become more comfortable behind the massive wake of Andrew Adkison’s fully loaded 2011 Mastercraft X-Star. The unfamiliarity with such a large wake was displayed throughout the day as many riders over rotated inverts and continually spoke of it as “the biggest wake they had ever rode”. At the end of the day, Paul Hoffman was awarded best crash for his over rotated front roll to massive faceplant. When it was all said and done the winners were announced with the top three teams being Malinoski, Webb and Palma, respectively.

There was an equally as successful turnout for sponsors once again at this year’s event. Sponsors included South Florida Mastercraft, Arrigo Dodge, Motion Watersports, Jamba Juice, Play-n-Trade, Just-In-Time Window Tint, Gatorbait Wakeboard School, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Redbull, Muscle Milk, Universal Detail, and Exceed Wetsuits.

In addition, Political Pictures also covered the event and the video can be viewed at: http://vimeo.com/16799696

So what is Pros and Joes? Just continue reading and your questions will be answered, if you still have questions after reading you can contact us at sfwake@yahoo.com .

The competition is planned to have thirty (30) local amateur riders plus ten (10) professional riders giving a total of forty (40) riders. In addition this year’s event will include something new–at the end of the day, the ten Pro riders will compete against each other in a best trick contest worth $1,000 to the winner. So the opportunity to see a the top Pros push hard for a victory should produce some exciting results.

The SFWA Pros-n-Joes event will be held this year on Saturday, November 6th, 2010 at the Micanopy Pavillion within Okeeheelee Park, West Palm Beach, Florida.

Past pros have included JD Webb, Adam Errington, Jimmy LaRiche, Aaron Reed, George Daniels, Josh Palma, Shawn Watson, Collin Harrington, Zane Schwenk, Kevin Henshaw and many more.

Let’s make this year the best year ever for Pros and Joes. If you have any questions about the information provided above or about information that I didn’t cover, please do not hesitate to contact us via email at sfwake@yahoo.com.

See you there and keep shredding!!!

The 2010 SFWA Showdown is complete and was a huge success. On what can only be described as a perfect day weather wise, the crowd was treated to some amazing riding. Every rider that participated gave it their all and the event was filled with awesome tricks, consistent runs and enjoyable crashes (at least for those watching). So first and foremost who won? Here are your winners by division:

Pro Wakeboard

Troy Wynne

Noah Flegel

Keenan Allen

Am Wakeboard

Gordy Cottrell

David Foreman

Ryan Schwartz

Female Wakeboard

Brooke Grassman

Becca Wenz

Christine McFaul

Wakeskate

Andrew Fortenberry

Joe “The Joker” Phillips

Kylar Howe

In addition the Just-In-Time Best Trick was awarded to Andrew Fortenberry for his wake to wake frontside big spin, and the Just-In-Time Worst Crash was awarded to Jacob Krigbaum for his toeside frontroll to faceplant.

Everytime we hold an event I leave being wowed by the level of riding. It is amazing what amatuers are doing behind the Mastercraft X-star. I can tell you first hand that today’s Professional riders have a crop of young riders right behing them pushing them and threatening to take their spots. Judging from the large crowd at the event, the wake community recognizes this as well.

In addition, the sponsors were super, providing an excellent opportunity to see the newest in wake related products. The SFWA winch was in full effect pulling those not competing in the event. So not a moment was lost during the day. Finally, for the first time our event was streamed live via the internet as well (thank you specifically to Nick Mohnacky for bringing the SFWA into the 21st century)

These events are not possible without our sponsors so a huge thank you to South Florida Mastercraft, Motion Watersports, Arrigo Dodge, CWB, Nike 6.0, Oakley, Hurley, Enoch Surfboards, DNA Energy Drinks, Vitamin Water, Just-In-Time Window Tinting, NachoBizness, Alaska Shaved Ice and LTS Wakeschool.

Finally a big shout out to the volunteers for the event, everyone who helped out (and there are too many to list but they know who they are) helped to make the event run as smooth as possible.

So what about pictures and video. Pictures are available right now on our Facebook page, so join us there via the homepage on our website. As picture come in from various sources this is the first place they will be updated. If your not on Facebook, we will be posting pictures on this site through our flicker account in the next few days. The event video will be ready in a week or so, so check back.

So there you have it, another successful event. Now catch your breathe and get ready for Pros and Joes on November 6th, 2010. The SFWA is moving forward, come join us!!!!!
